The Golden Gate Bridge - one of the wonders of the world - is a suspension bridge linking the city of San Francisco to Marin County over the Golden Gate strait. The bridge levies tolls on all motorised vehicles going southbound only[1]. Pedestrians and bikes are exempted from tolls.

How to pay Golden Gate Bridge Toll Charges

The Golden Gate Bridge toll plaza is electronic; accepts no cash any more. For frequent commuters, FasTrak is the preferred method of toll payment on the Golden Gate Bridge because it offers the most discount. There are other three ways to pay toll here:

1. License Plate Account
2. One-Time Payment
3. Toll Invoice

These methods are preferred by occasional travellers.

The toll cost to cross the Golden Gate Bridge depends upon the vehicle type[2] and payment method. Tolls are charged in one direction only — in the southbound direction into San Francisco.

Golden Gate Rental Cars Tolls

Most rental car companies offer their own tolling program, which may be the most convenient way to pay your Golden Gate Bridge toll.

If you opt out of it, you can do a One-Time Payment[3] or open a License Plate Account[4]. Those with a valid FasTrak can use the transponder in the rental car by changing the linked license plate temporarily (with that of the rental car’s).

Golden Gate Carpool Tolls

Carpools and vehicles with CAV decals in California avail the toll discount on the Golden Gate Bridge [5]. They must use toll lane #2 at the west (right) side and have a FasTrak Flex activated to signal carpooling.

Eligible vehicles for Carpool discounts:

  • Vehicles with three or more persons
  • Motorcycles
  • Buses
  • 2-axle or 4-wheeler trucks

Note: Toll Discount hours for Carpool on Golden Gate Bridge is 5:00 AM to 9:00 AM and 4:00 PM to 6:00 PM weekdays, except on New Year’s Day, Presidents’ Day, Memorial Day, July 4th, Labor Day, Thanksgiving Day, and Christmas Day.
