Mexico has extensive toll roads, highways and other toll facilities across all its states except in Aguascalientes. The toll roads are called ‘Cuota’ while the parallel-running free roads are called ‘Libre’. The major toll roads are:

  • Highway 1D
  • Monterrey – Nuevo Laredo (Highways 85D)
  • Monterrey – Saltillo (Highway 40D)
  • Highway 101
  • Chamapa-Lechería (Highway 57D)

Do note that not all toll booths accept all the 5 toll passes. U.S. dollars and credit cards are not accepted on most of the toll roads except near some tourist places.

It is recommended to keep your toll ticket during travel, as it serves as a token of insurance en route.

IAVE Pass Mexico

IAVE (automatic vehicle identification) tag transponder is one of the most common toll passes in Mexico. With this mounted on your vehicle, you need not stop to pay the tolls. It is primarily used on CAPUFE toll roads but is also valid on other roads. You can buy an IAVE pass online[2], over the phone or from their point-of-sale locations.
