Texas has one of the most extensive tollway networks among the US states. The Dallas North Tollway of DFW, Fort Bend Parkway in Houston and Pickle Parkway in Austin are some of the major tollways here; also counted among the most expensive in the US. There are 27 toll bridges across the state including Lewisville Lake Toll Bridge, Mountain Creek Lake Toll Bridge, Free Trade Bridge in Cameron County among others. Texas also has eight express lanes active currently and some are upcoming.

Most of the toll plazas here are electronic so the preferred method to pay toll in Texas is a tag transponder like TollTag, EZ TAG and others. All of these are interoperable but issued by different agencies. If you miss a toll on an NTAA toll facility, ZipCash is a convenient way to pay. For other toll facilities, missed toll payment in Texas varies.

Use Texas Toll Calculator to calculate toll and gas costs to travel across Texas and other US states' toll facilities.

How do you pay for toll roads in Texas

Main article: How to pay toll in Texas

Most of the toll facilities in Texas are equipped with electronic gantries (are cashless) so a toll tag is a preferred mode of payment here. You can use a TxTag issued by TxDOT and any other toll tags compatible with it. You cannot pay tolls using E-ZPass in Texas. There are some toll bridges and toll roads that still accept cash. You can also use video tolling system such as Pay by mail on TxDOT roads or ZipCash on NTTA roads.

Refer to various methods to pay toll in Texas for more detail.

How do you pay missed toll in Texas

If you don't have a compatible tag while crossing toll plazas in Texas, you can still pay your tolls through Pay-By-Mail or ZipCash systems. Pay-By-Mail is a program by TxDOT, while ZipCash is offered by NTTA. Within approximately a month, you should receive a toll bill if you don't have a valid tag. Simply follow the instructions on the invoice to pay the toll using cash, card, or online banking. If you haven't received a bill, it's advisable to update your vehicle and personal information with the DMV. Alternatively, you can visit the online toll payment portal of the respective tolling agency and make the payment. For any inquiries, contact the tolling authority by phone: North Texas Tollway Authority (TollTag): 1-972-818-6882

Harris County Toll Road Authority (EZ TAG): 1-281-875-3279

Central Texas Regional Mobility Authority: 1-833-762-8655

Kansas Turnpike Authority (K-TAG): 1-316-652-2650

Oklahoma Turnpike Authority (PIKEPASS): 1-800-745-3727

When a motorist without a valid toll tag drives through tolling points, high-speed cameras take digital images of the license plate, and the tolls are billed to the registered owner of the vehicle. On receiving such a notice, you have to pay the missed toll via ZipCash. You can also make a payment through the automated phone service by calling 1-888-468-9824.

TxTag, TollTag and EZ TAG are all tag transponders accepted in Texas to pay tolls electronically. The electronic toll system is also interoperable with K-Tag of Kansas and PIKEPASS of Oklahoma. There are bridges on the Mexico-Texas border that only accept cash.
