TxTag is an electronic tag transponder that works across most of the Texas toll roads, bridges, express lanes and other toll facilities. You can also use TxTag at the DFW Airport toll cum parking. Issued by the Texas Department of Transport (TxDOT), with this installed in your vehicle, you need not stop to pay tolls and can access their dedicated lanes, avail discounts etc. It is compatible with TollTag and EZ TAG.

You can contact TxTag toll-free at 1-888-468-9824 or visit the TxTag website[1]. International customers can call 001-214-210-0493.

A TxTag does not cost but a pre-payment of $20 is required while creating an account.

Calculate toll cost to travel across Texas with TxTag installed in your vehicle using TxTag Toll Calculator.

TxTag toll violation

If you cross a TxTag lane without a valid transponder, it is counted as a TxTag toll violation. A Pay By Mail statement[2] is sent to the vehicle owner which includes higher toll rates and a $1.15 statement fee. A late fee of $4.00 is charged every month if you avoid paying the toll.

For habitual TxTag toll violators, TxDOT has the authority to:

  • Publish the list of top violators
  • Ticket and impound the vehicle
  • Ban vehicles from using TxDOT toll roads
  • Report to county tax assessor-collectors
  • Block renewal of their vehicle registration

Drivers with unpaid tolls of TxTag can contact their customer service centre at 1-888-468-9824 for a negotiated settlement of the due amount.

You can calculate TxTag tolls before your trip through Texas toll facilities using TxTag Toll Calculator.

How do I check my TxTag balance

You can check your TxTag balance by:

  • Logging into your TxTag account [3]
  • Calling TxTag Customer Service Center at 1-888-468-9824

Are EZ Tag and TxTag the same

No, EZ TAG and TxTag are not the same. They are two different toll tags that work across most of the toll facilities of Texas and are interoperable i.e. EZ TAG works for TxTag tolls lanes and vice versa.

Comparison of EZ Tag and TxTag
EZ TAG TxTag
Issued by HCTRA Issued by TxDOT
$40 pre-payment required $20 pre payment required

Refer to EZ TAG toll tag page to learn details of its coverage, costs and more.

Is there a monthly fee for TxTag

There is no monthly fee for TxTag. While signing up for TxTag you pay $20. You can then opt for TxTag payment automatically by linking your account to your debit or credit card. If you do not opt for an autopay account you will be required to monitor the money when it gets low and add the amount accordingly.

Can I use my TxTag in more than one vehicle

No, you cannot use the same TxTag on more than one vehicle as TxTag has to be permanently mounted on the vehicle and removing the tag can damage the chip inside the TxTag.  However, you can order multiple tags from one account either through TxTag website or by calling the customer service center.  To manage a fleet of vehicles you can open a commercial account here[4]

Can I use TxTag in a rental vehicle

You cannot use a TxTag removed from another vehicle on a rental vehicle. Tolls for rental car depend upon the rental car agreement where rental car agencies use other companies like- PlatePass or Highway Toll Administration for toll charge management.  If there is no third party company incharge of managing tolls, the drivers will be charged for tolls at Pay by Mail rates along with a service fee.
